Domain, Hosting, SSL & DNS: 4 Foundations Before You Build a Website
Plain-language guide to domain, hosting, SSL and DNS — core concepts every business owner should know before launching a website.
Before design or SEO, understand four building blocks that make your site live on the Internet: domain, hosting, SSL, and DNS.
Domain — your web address
Your domain is what people type in the browser (e.g. techpartner.vn). Register early, keep ownership under your company, and choose .vn for Vietnam-first brands or .com for international reach.
Hosting — where files live
Hosting stores HTML, images, code, and databases. Options:
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Shared | Small brochure sites |
| VPS | More control, moderate traffic |
| Cloud (Vercel, AWS…) | Modern stacks, Next.js, SaaS |

SSL — HTTPS is mandatory
SSL encrypts traffic and shows the padlock. Google favors HTTPS; customers trust forms and checkout more. Free Let’s Encrypt is enough for most SMB sites.
DNS — maps name to server
DNS records (A, CNAME) point your domain to hosting. When migrating hosts, update DNS at your registrar and wait for propagation (minutes to 48h). Cloudflare is a popular free DNS + CDN layer.
Go-live checklist
- Domain owned by your business
- Stable hosting with backups
- SSL active, HTTP → HTTPS redirect
- Optional: email
