Still, a little knowledge about how Google works helps customers find you. This 4-part course takes under 30 minutes total. Part 1 explains how Search works and what ranking means.
Who needs Search Console now?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Blogger / Wix / Squarespace | Platform handles basics; focus on content + Google Business (Part 2) |
| Self-hosted WordPress | Consider Google Site Kit (Part 4) |
| Custom / Next.js sites | Use Search Console + GA4 — see advanced series Part 4 |
Three steps: Crawl → Index → Rank
Web → [1. Crawl] → [2. Index] → [3. Rank] → Search results
Crawl: Googlebot follows links and reads pages.
Index: Google stores pages that can appear in search.
Rank: For each query, Google orders indexed pages by relevance and quality.
Ranking changes constantly by keyword, location, and device.
Ranking factors (simplified)
- Search intent — page answers what the user wanted
- Content quality (E-E-A-T) — experience, expertise, authority, trust
- Page experience — mobile-friendly, fast, HTTPS, no intrusive popups
- External signals — backlinks, Google Business reviews, brand searches
- Personalization — location and history affect results
SEO is not a trick — it is making your site findable, useful, and trustworthy.
5-minute exercise
- Google your business name — do you appear?
- Google your service + city — top 10?
- Write 2 keywords customers ask on phone/Zalo — use them in Part 3.
Next: Part 2 — Get your business on Google (Maps, Search, YouTube)
